The Story Behind the Story: “Therapy Dance”

I am fascinated by the index of psychiatric disorders commonly known as the DSM-IV, which is amazingly large and descriptive. In fact, with so many choices, it makes you wonder how troubled almost everyone is. I, for instance, wonder if I have Dissociative Fugue or possibly Sleep Terror Disorder. I don’t think this is funny, but there is a lyric quality to the names of the disorders. The disorders in my poem are names I invented but the names seem to capture something larger about our disturbed culture, and furthermore about our tendency to stratify everything, even people. I would challenge the reader to imagine a picturesque 2-word description of their own particular neurosis.
