The Story Behind the Story: “The Kidnapper’s Journal”

This flash fiction was initially written as a poem in 2003 after Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, and survived. Imagining the mindset of a man who would do this kind of thing was the hardest part about writing it, but as I did, I found lust to be less the impetus than the desire for possession, and the power that comes with that. I have written narrative poems for years – and just recently discovered I can morph some of them into a flash fiction format. That is what transpired with this one.
